Options

  1. AMahendravarman ICorrect answer
  2. BSimhavishnu
  3. CNarasimhavarman I
  4. DSimhavarman

The answer: Mahendravarman I

Mahendravarman I, the early seventh century Pallava ruler who succeeded Simhavishnu, is known from his own inscriptions to have assumed several titles reflecting his many-sided personality as warrior, poet, musician and architect. Mattavilasa points to his authorship of the Sanskrit farce Mattavilasa Prahasana, a satire mocking a Kapalika ascetic and a Buddhist monk. Vichitrachitta, meaning one of curious or wonderful mind, appears in his Mandagapattu inscription, where he is credited with building a temple to Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva without brick, timber, metal or mortar, marking the start of Pallava rock-cut architecture. Gunabhara, meaning repository of virtues, occurs in his Tiruchirapalli cave inscription. No other early Pallava ruler carries this specific cluster of epithets, which fixes the answer firmly on Mahendravarman I.

What UPSC was testing

The question tests recall of Mahendravarman I's specific epithets rather than general Pallava history, and the options are deliberately built from his father, son and namesake predecessors, so a candidate who knows only the broad Pallava genealogy but not the exact inscriptional titles can be misled into picking a relative instead.

How often this comes up

This concept has appeared 7 times in UPSC Prelims General Studies Paper I between 2015 and 2025 — in 2017, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2025.

The option-by-option autopsy for this question — why each of the other three is wrong, and which neighbouring concept each one was built from — is in the app.
